The History of Arco

The history of Arco gas station goes back to 1954 when the first gas pump was installed. It was originally called the Ford Service Station and operated by the Ford Motor Company. The station soon became a popular stop for customers travelling between San Bernardino and Los Angeles. In 1971, a Chevron gas station opened up across the street from Arco and the two stations began competing with each other. In 1988, both stations were acquired by Texaco and remained closed until December of 2001 when they reopened under new ownership as Chevron/Texaco.

In 2004, BP purchased Texaco’s share in the station and it has remained under their ownership ever since. In 2006, an addition was built on the side of the building that houses a convenience store, plus another three pumps were added to serve customers in more convenient locations. The original 1950s style block sign was also restored and put back into operation.

Harry served as the station’s manager until his death in 1979. Ray continued to manage the business until his own death in 1988. In 2003, Arco was acquired by Pilot Travel Centers, a subsidiary of Pilot Corporation. Today, it is one of Pilot Travel Centers’ largest stations with more than 60 fuel pumps and an extensive convenience store offering items such as cigarettes, alcohol, snacks and ice cream.
